The tweet was the first salvo of a campaign to take down the state party.

"This is the latest in a long history of targeting and shutting down Democratic Party offices," said state Senator Steve Sweeney, who sponsored the legislation this year.

On Tuesday, Sweeney said the "primary purpose" of his bill — which called for the primary election of delegates to the Democratic National Convention to be called on July 25 — "is to stop the flow of information from Bernie Sanders supporters and other potential voters to the Democratic Party. And to do that, it takes a few extra days."

On Wednesday, Sweeney released a statement criticizing the "desperate and counterproductive efforts" to stop delegates from supporting Sanders, and demanding that the primary be changed to ensure a choice for Democrats.

"By trying to shut down the Democratic Party's democratic process — especially on this historic day — Democrats are putting their supporters and members of the national party at risk," the statement read.

In his statement, Sweeney added that delegates should be chosen by the party's national convention, rather than by the state convention.

He also called for the primary to be switched to accommodate delegates who choose to "protest in their state convention."

While many state delegates signed off on the legislation, a number of Republicans in attendance said they didn't think the idea was appropriate.

"It's an effort by the DNC to manipulate the voting," said Bill Barfield, who represents parts of New Hampshire. "If it works, then so be it. I'm an independent."

The effort, Barfield said, was inspired by Republican efforts to stop the primary of John Kerry in 2004. In the end, the primaries of Al Gore, John Kerry, and John McCain were the chosen candidates.

For his part, Trump had not taken a position on the legislation, but referred to his tweet on Wednesday morning.

"I'll probably do something. We'll see," he said, before pausing to offer a one-word response: "Goodbye!"
